Hexa-X-II Project Publishes Deliverable D5.2 on 6G Device Classes

The Hexa-X-II Project has released its newest research deliverable, D5.2, advancing the field of 6G technology. Originating from Work Package 5 (WP5), this report goes into the characteristics and classifications of 6G device classes. It analyses the project’s envisioned 6G use cases to identify the various novel devices that help to realise them.

Exploring the Intricacies of 6G Device Classes

D5.2 provides an in-depth analysis of the requirements and characteristics of future devices in 6G systems. It categorises 6G devices into distinct classes, highlighting each one’s unique features and technology enablers and bringing out a set of commonalities between some of them. This classification aids in preparing for their seamless integration into 6G systems and in defining relevant system enablers, such as computational offloading for devices with limited capabilities.

Focus on Sustainability and Novel Device Classes

The deliverable goes beyond technical specifications to include economic, environmental, and social sustainability considerations for each device class. It identifies four novel 6G device classes:

  • Energy Neutral Devices: Enabling maintenance-free, environmentally friendly sensing.
  • Reliable High Data Rate with Bounded Latency Devices: Geared towards immersive Extended Reality (XR) experiences.
  • High Reliable and Low Latency Devices: Targeting industrial use-cases involving collaborative robots (cobots), autonomous guided vehicles, etc.
  • Enhancements of Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC) Devices: Designed for energy-efficient IoT at a massive scale.

Toward the first iteration of the E2E 6G System Design

Within the framework of Hexa-X-II’s WP5, D5.2 is a step towards the first iteration of an end-to-end 6G system design. It contributes to a better understanding of future device types and their associated characteristics, which will enable, among others, societal well-being, enhanced user experiences, and sustainable industrial automation solutions.
